7 Signs It’s Time to Remove a Palm Tree
1. It’s leaning more than it used to
A palm that’s started to lean, especially after heavy rain or a storm, may have root problems. That’s a job for an arborist to check fast.
2. The crown is dying or shrinking
A thin, yellowing or shrinking crown (the “head” of the palm) often means the palm is on the way out. Once the growing tip dies, it won’t recover.
3. Trunk damage or rot
Soft spots, cracks, fungus or holes in the trunk weaken the palm and can lead to it snapping in high winds.
4. It’s too close to the house, pool or power lines
Cocos palms and Cunjevoi planted years ago can end up crowding gutters, pool fences and overhead lines. Falling fronds can weigh several kilos.
5. Roots lifting pavers or the pool
Palm roots aren’t as destructive as some trees, but in tight courtyards and pool areas they can still lift pavers and edging.
6. Constant mess
Cocos palms (Queen palms) drop fronds, seeds and fruit that attract bats and pests and stain paving. Many councils across South East Queensland now treat them as an environmental weed.
7. Storm season is coming
Tall, unhealthy palms are a common cause of storm damage on the Coast. Getting them sorted before summer beats an emergency call-out.
Clean-Up vs Removal
Not every palm needs to go. A palm clean removes dead fronds, seed pods and fruit to keep it safe and tidy. If the palm is healthy and in a good spot, that’s often all you need. If it’s dying, leaning or in the wrong place, removal is the safer bet.
Do You Need Council Approval to Remove a Palm?
