People use the words tree lopping and pruning for the same thing, but there is a difference. Tree lopping is the heavier cut-back you need when a tree is too big for its space – reducing height, spread and weight in one go.
Pruning and trimming is lighter, more selective work that keeps a tree healthy and looking good over the years, such as removing dead wood, crossing branches and water shoots.
Good tree lopping is still done with proper cuts at the right points on the branch. Hacking a tree back to stumps (topping) usually causes weak regrowth and more problems down the track, so we avoid it and explain the better options.
