Do you give free quotes?
Yes. Every quote is free and there’s no obligation to go ahead. We come out, look at the job with you and give you a clear written price.
How much does tree removal cost on the Gold Coast?
Tree removal prices depend on the size and condition of the tree, access, what’s nearby (houses, pools, fences, powerlines) and whether you want the stump ground and waste removed. That’s why we quote each job on site. See our tree removal page for more.
Can you quote from photos?
Photos are a great starting point and help us give you a rough idea, especially for stump grinding and smaller jobs. For bigger trees we’ll usually still come out to confirm access and hazards before giving a final price.
Is the price you quote the price I pay?
Yes. The price we agree before we start is the price you pay. If you ask for extra work on the day, we’ll agree that with you first.
How soon can you start?
It depends on the season and how busy we are. We always try to fit in urgent and storm-damage work quickly, and we’ll give you a date when we quote.
What are your hours?
Monday to Friday 7am–5pm and Saturday 7am–2pm. Sundays are closed, with storm callouts by arrangement.
Council Rules & Approvals
Do I need council approval to remove a tree on the Gold Coast?
Sometimes. It depends on the tree, its size and species, and any vegetation protection on your property. The City of Gold Coast guide to tree and vegetation removal on private land explains when approval is required. We check this as part of every tree removal quote.
Are there exemptions?
Yes. The council lists a number of exemptions – for example, some trees close to an approved house or along an existing boundary fence, trees confirmed as dangerous by a suitably qualified arborist, and listed pest species. The details matter, so we check your situation before any work starts.
Are cocos palms protected?
Cocos palms are on the City of Gold Coast pest tree species list. The council says they can generally be removed once identified by a qualified (AQF Level 3) arborist, while still checking any state or federal rules.
What happens if I remove a protected tree without approval?
Removing protected vegetation without approval can lead to fines, so it’s always worth checking first. We’ll tell you upfront if we think approval is needed.
Do I need approval to prune a tree?
Light pruning is usually fine, but major work on protected trees may need approval. We’ll let you know if your job is likely to be affected.
Tree Removal & Lopping
How do you remove a tree that’s right next to the house?
Piece by piece. The tree is climbed and dismantled from the top down, with each section lowered on ropes so nothing lands on the roof, gutters, fence or pool. For very large trees we may use a crane.
What’s the difference between tree lopping and tree removal?
Tree lopping reduces the size of a tree that’s grown too big, while tree removal takes the whole tree down. If a tree is healthy and in a reasonable spot, lopping or pruning is often the better choice.
Will lopping kill my tree?
Not if it’s done properly. Healthy trees recover well from a sensible reduction. Topping – cutting a tree back to bare stumps – is what causes problems, so we avoid it.
How long does a tree removal take?
Most residential jobs take a few hours to a full day, including the clean-up. Big trees, tight access or several trees can take longer.
Can I keep the wood?
Yes. We can cut the trunk into rounds for firewood or garden projects, or take everything away.
Will you damage my lawn or garden?
We take care to protect lawns, gardens and paving, using boards and careful lowering where needed, and we clean up access paths before we leave.
Pruning, Palms & Stumps
How often should trees be pruned?
Most garden trees benefit from pruning every one to three years. Hedges and fast-growing screens usually need a trim a couple of times a year.
When is the best time to prune on the Gold Coast?
Most trees can be pruned year-round. Flowering trees are best done after flowering, fruit trees after harvest, and big canopies before the summer storm season.
Why do people remove cocos palms?
Heavy seed heads, rotting fruit, dropped fronds and the flying foxes and rats they attract. They’re also treated as a weed. See our palm tree removal page for more.
Can you clean my palm instead of removing it?
Yes. If it’s healthy and in a good spot, we can remove dead fronds, seed pods and flower spikes.
How deep do you grind stumps?
Standard stump grinding goes below ground level, deep enough for turf and garden beds. We can go deeper for paving, building or replanting.
Will a tree grow back after stump grinding?
Most won’t. A few species can send up the odd shoot from leftover roots, which is easy to remove.
Hedges & Screens
Do you trim hedges?
Yes. We trim lilly pillies, murrayas, viburnums, bamboo and other screens as a one-off tidy-up or on a regular schedule, alongside your other tree service work.
How often should a hedge be trimmed?
Fast-growing screens on the Gold Coast usually need trimming two or three times a year, mostly in the warmer months when they grow fastest.
Why is my hedge thin at the bottom?
Usually because the top has been allowed to get wider than the base, shading the lower leaves. Trimming the hedge slightly narrower at the top lets light reach the bottom so it thickens up again.
Can you reduce the height of a tall screen?
Yes. Overgrown screens can be cut back to a manageable height. We may do it in stages over a season or two so the plants recover well and stay dense.
Safety, Insurance & Powerlines
Are you fully insured?
Yes. O’Healy Tree Service is fully insured, so you’re covered for the work we carry out on your property.
Can you cut branches near powerlines?
It depends on which lines they are and how close the branches are. Some clearances can only be done by the network operator or authorised contractors. Energex has information on trees and powerlines, and we’ll explain the safe option for your property.
What safety gear does your crew use?
Professional climbing harnesses and ropes, rigging equipment, helmets, eye and hearing protection, chainsaw-protective clothing and more. We also set up an exclusion zone around every job.
Do I need to be home while you work?
Not always. As long as we can get access and the area is clear, many customers leave us to it. We’ll let you know when we arrive and when we’re done.
Do you check for underground services before stump grinding?
Yes, and we ask you to tell us about any pipes or cables you know of. Before You Dig Australia also provides free information about underground services.
Storms & Emergencies
A tree has fallen in a storm – what should I do?
Keep everyone well clear, especially if powerlines could be involved. If lines are down, call the network operator or emergency services first. Once it’s safe, call us and we’ll make the site safe and clear the tree.

How can I prepare my trees for storm season?
Have dead wood removed, dense canopies thinned and heavy limbs reduced in late winter or spring. Get any leaning or cracked trees checked before the storms arrive.
Will my insurance cover storm damage to trees?
That depends on your policy. Many insurers cover removal of trees that have damaged the house or fences, but not always trees that simply fell in the yard. Check with your insurer – we can provide a written quote and photos for your claim.
Before & After The Job
How should I prepare for tree work?
Move cars, boats and trailers away from the work area, bring in outdoor furniture and pot plants, keep pets inside, and unlock side gates. Let neighbours know if we need to work near a shared fence.
Will there be a lot of noise?
Chainsaws, chippers and stump grinders are noisy, so we work within normal hours and try to keep noisy work as short as possible. Letting neighbours know in advance always helps.
What will my yard look like afterwards?
Clean. Branches are chipped, lawns raked, paths and driveways blown down, and any mulch you’re keeping is left where you want it.
How do I look after a tree after pruning?
Water deeply in dry spells, keep a ring of mulch around the root zone (not against the trunk) and watch for fast, upright regrowth that may need a light follow-up trim.
More Tree Removal Questions
Can you remove a tree without a crane?
Yes. Most residential tree removal on the Gold Coast is done by climbing and lowering sections on ropes. A crane is only needed for very large trees or where there’s no safe way to lower sections.
Do you remove dead trees?
Yes. Dead trees become brittle and unpredictable, so tree removal is usually the safest option. We’ll also check nearby trees for similar problems.
Can you remove trees for a new pool or extension?
Yes. We clear trees and grind stumps before renovations and new builds, so your builder or landscaper can get straight to work.
Can you remove a tree on a steep block?
Steep and sloping blocks are common in the Gold Coast hinterland suburbs. They take more planning and rigging, but they’re no problem for an experienced tree removal crew.
Neighbours, Rentals & Body Corporates
My neighbour’s tree hangs over my fence – what can I do?
Start with a friendly chat with your neighbour. In Queensland, disputes about neighbours’ trees are covered by the Neighbourhood Disputes (Dividing Fences and Trees) Act 2011, and the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) can help if you can’t agree. We can quote on the overhanging section and explain the options.
Who is responsible for trees at a rental property?
It depends on the tenancy agreement and the type of work. Major tree work is usually arranged by the owner or property manager. If you’re a tenant, speak to your property manager before booking any tree work.
Do you work with body corporates?
Yes. We provide clear written quotes for committees and managers, can schedule regular maintenance, and work carefully around residents and common property.
Can you provide paperwork for strata or insurance?
Yes. We can provide written quotes, invoices and photos of the job for your records, your committee or your insurer.

Can a tree be saved instead of removed?
Often, yes. If a tree is healthy and structurally sound, pruning or lopping can fix problems like overhanging branches, shade or weight. We’ll always tell you honestly whether a tree can be kept.
What happens to the green waste?
Branches and leaves are chipped into mulch on site. You can keep it for your garden – it’s great for holding moisture and keeping weeds down – or we can take it away.
Which trees are weeds on the Gold Coast?
Common examples include cocos palms, camphor laurel, umbrella trees and African tulip trees. The City of Gold Coast pest tree species list has the full list.
What should I plant after a tree is removed?
Choose something that suits the space when it’s fully grown. Native shrubs, small feature trees and hedges are often a better fit for suburban yards than big shade trees. Plant slightly to one side of the old stump, into fresh soil.
Choosing A Tree Service
What should I look for in a tree service?
Make sure they’re fully insured, give you a clear written quote, explain what they’ll cut and why, know the council rules, and don’t push you into removal when pruning would do. Avoid anyone offering to top a tree back to bare stumps.
Why is tree work more expensive than general gardening?
Tree work involves working at height, heavy timber, chainsaws, rigging and sometimes powerlines. It needs specialist gear, experienced climbers and proper insurance – which is why a professional tree service costs more than a mow and blow.
Is it cheaper to do it myself?
For small shrubs and hedges, maybe. For anything involving ladders, chainsaws, big limbs or trees near buildings and powerlines, it’s not worth the risk. Injuries and property damage cost far more than a professional quote.
Do you do small jobs?
Yes. No job is too small – a single tree trim, one stump or a few palms are all welcome, and we can often combine small jobs to save you money.
